How to ensure you have the right water damage company

Without water, life on earth as we know it would cease to exist. Without water, there simply would be no life. Yet when our homes or businesses flood, that same water can pose a large threat to us.

The most important rule during a home water lossis to never put your life at risk in order to save personal property. Personal property can be replaced by insurance, but lives can’t.

Taking on water damage is not a game for novices. It requires the care and experties of professionals who know what they’re doing. This is why you need a specialized water damage restoration company. There are many inexperienced companies who spend huge amounts of money on advertising. With the addition of the internet it provides the perfect cloak for inexperience and any small outfit can disguise themselves as professional water damage companies. So how would one be able to see through the hype and pick the best water damage company?

Here are some things that you can consider to help you with your decision.

Deal with companies rather than individual contractors:

While some smaller companies may say they will do the work for cheap, they dont know what they’re doing and it may work out more expensive in the long run. This is because water damage restoration is a highly professional job that often requires multiple skills. The required training is a must and experience is also great to have. The latest equipment and technology is also required in order to do the job right, from the meters used to take readings to huge dehumidifiers and air movers. Carpet cleaning companies that also do water damage mitigation don’t always have the right equipment and make do with what they have or worse still, rent the equipment and who knows where it’s been or if it even works.

Get copies of their certifications, insurance and qualifications:

Never trust their word, you dont know them, ask them for copies of their certifications and insurance. Even ask for a few references and call them up – this may not be possible when you’re standing in 2 feet of water, but certainaly for a fire loss or mold damage. It could mean the difference between someone not having a clue and professional company taking care of you in your time of need. Let the pieces of paper speak for them. You may be amazed at what comes out of the woodwork when you ask for their certifications I’ve even heard of a big name restoration company lying about their certifications and being found out by the home owner needless to say they were kicked off the job.

Do they have a grasp of the scope of the job?

During the interview, you can have a quick scan of what the water damage company is proposing to undertake. Request a work plan from the lead technician on the job. If they can’t provide a high level plan for the job then you should doubt their abilities. It’s reasonable to expect some leeway when it comes to drying out a home because some materials respond differently to others when drying a home, but they should have a rough idea about the timeline.
